Social Studies - Greek and Roman Civilizations

Project Type

Dance, Fine Craft

Implementation Sites

Charles Townes Center at the Sterling School

Grade Level

6th - World History

This unit offers 6th-grade students an immersive exploration of Greek and Roman civilizations, delving into their respective beliefs, ethics, architectural marvels, artistic expressions, and groundbreaking inventions. Employing modern interpretive dance techniques within a structured framework of dance elements, students creatively translate their understanding of these historical cultures into a six-part movement series. Additionally, each student will craft two symbolic headpieces: a Greek laurel wreath and a Roman soldier's helmet, further deepening their engagement with the historical context. Collaboratively, students will plan their choreography, drawing upon the diverse dance elements they have honed throughout the course. Culminating in a group performance, each ensemble will present their interpretation to the class, prompting thoughtful reflection as observers discern the comparisons woven into the artistic presentations.
